DESCRIPTION:Downtown Nashville- Korean Veterans Blvd (Davidson Co.) Wednesday\, August 5th at 7:30 pm.\n\n\n\nJoin the Nashville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society (NTOS) for a special evening birding event as we gather to witness the spectacular evening roost of thousands of Purple Martins in downtown Nashville.\n\n\n\nIn recent weeks\, large numbers of Purple Martins have been gathering downtown at dusk. For those familiar with downtown Nashville\, this year’s roost is in the trees along Korean Veterans Boulevard next to the roundabout featuring the Stix public art display. Coordinates for this location are:  36.15522\, -86.77892.\n\nWe will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, August 5\, on the opposite side of Korean Veterans Boulevard from the roost\, just off the roundabout. From there\, we will watch as the birds gather and settle into the trees for the evening.\n\n\n\nSeveral paid parking options are available in the surrounding area\, including at the Music City Center and along Korean Veterans Boulevard. Attendees should allow sufficient time to find parking and walk to the roost location before dusk.\n\n\nBring binoculars\, a lawn chair if desired\, water\, and weather-appropriate clothing. The evening will begin with a visit to the park’s Native Plant & Butterfly Garden\, followed by a guided exploration of nearby glade habitat in search of nightjars such as Common Nighthawks\, Whip-poor-wills\, and Chuck-will’s-widows. \nAs dusk settles\, we’ll listen and look for nightjars and owls in the unique cedar glade ecosystem of southern Wilson County. This promises to be a relaxed and enjoyable evening of birding\, with opportunities to experience the sights and sounds of late spring after dark. \nBring a lawn chair\, water\, snacks\, and insect repellent. More details including timing\, meeting location\, and additional logistics will be shared as plans are finalized. It’s sure to be a fun night in the field!

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore one of the most popular birding areas in Davidson County\, Bells Bend Park. Mike Smith will lead us as we explore the fields and woods of Bells Bend Park in search of the birds found here including Northern Bobwhite\, Indigo Bunting\, Orchard and Baltimore Orioles\, Yellow-breasted Chat\, Common Yellowthroat\, Prairie Warbler\, Blue-winged Warbler\, and in recent years\, Dickcissel. We’ll also keep an eye out for other migrating warblers\, flycatchers\, and grassland species such as Bobolink that may be moving through during this time. \nTo maximize the number of birds seen and take advantage of cooler morning temperatures\, we’ll plan on an early start. We will meet at the visitor center on Saturday\, May 16th at 6:30 a.m. Waterproof footwear and bug spray are highly recommended\, as trails may be damp and insects active. We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a rewarding and bird-filled morning!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our recurrent spring trip to explore the private 45-acre property of the Fremont family and their avid birder son\, Ari\, in southeastern Davidson County between Nolensville and Smyrna (8856 Rocky Fork Road\, Smyrna\, TN 37167). Ari will lead us on a walk through their beautiful mix of gardens\, woods\, and pastures; all prime habitat for a wide variety of neotropical migrants during peak spring migration. \nWe’ll begin at 7:00 a.m. Once you arrive at the driveway\, head past the black barn and turn left up the gravel road to the back of the property\, where there is ample parking and access to the trails. A cabin on site (with restrooms available) will serve as our gathering spot. \nAt the conclusion of the walk\, we’ll enjoy cookies\, milk\, and coffee\, along with a little live “farm jazz” music courtesy of Asher and Elinor. Those who would like to linger are welcome to bring a bag lunch and spend more time visiting and enjoying the property. Join us for this fun outing graciously provided by the Fremont family!

DESCRIPTION:Join NTOS for a spring field trip to the Gossett Tract of Harpeth River State Park (1230 Cedar Hill Rd\, Kingston Springs\, TN 37082)\, a scenic riverside property in Kingston Springs. This tract features a mix of open fields\, riparian habitat along the Harpeth River\, and wooded edges making it an excellent spot to look for early spring migrants as well as resident species. The river corridor can be especially productive for swallows\, warblers\, vireos\, and flycatchers\, while the fields may host sparrows and other grassland birds. \nWe’ll begin at 7:00 a.m. and take an approximately 2-mile walk along the gravel and natural-surface pathways. The terrain is relatively flat and open\, offering wide views of the surrounding habitat. \nBring water\, binoculars\, and dress for the weather. We hope you’ll join us for a beautiful spring morning along the Harpeth!

DESCRIPTION:Come explore Lytle Park\, one of the newest gems in Nashville’s expanding park system! \nOur fall field trips to this park have consistently drawn great interest\, and this year we’re switching things up with a visit in a different season. March brings a unique blend of lingering winter species and the earliest signs of spring migration. From sparrows and raptors to waterfowl on the ponds\, this under-birded landscape promises exciting discoveries even in the final weeks of winter. \nFor this field trip\, we’ll be guided by Grant Winter\, a local birder who frequents Lytle/Ravenwood Park and knows its habitats well. March 21st offers a wonderful blend of lingering winter species and the first hints of early spring migration. \nWe’ll meet at 7:00 AM at the parking lot and playground at Ravenwood Park in Hermitage (Park Coordinates: 36.190870\, -86.646290). DESCRIPTION:For our second field trip of the month\, we’re staying close to home and heading to one of Nashville’s popular birding spots: Cornelia Fort Airpark in Shelby Bottoms Park. Trip leader Ariel Dunham\, an expert on the birds of Shelby Park\, will guide us on this outing on Saturday\, February 28th. \nThis trip offers a unique twist: we’ll begin in the afternoon\, exploring the ponds for waterfowl and sparrows as we make our way toward sunset. As dusk settles\, we’ll keep our eyes on the open fields\, hoping to catch a Short-eared Owl sweeping across the airpark. \nWe’ll meet at 3:30 PM at the Airpark parking area (Address: 2640 Airpark Dr Nashville\, TN 37206; coordinates: 36.19080\, -86.70387). DESCRIPTION:What better way to brighten up chilly February than with two NTOS field trips on the calendar? \nFirst up: Saturday\, February 14th\, when we’ll head to one of Tennessee’s premier birding hotspots\, the Fowler Road Irrigation Pond. Trip leader Avery Fish knows this site very well and has turned up an impressive list of species here over the years. \nOur targets for the morning include a great mix of waterfowl and sparrows\, with possibilities like LeConte’s Sparrow\, Western Meadowlark\, Longspurs\, and Short-eared Owl. \nWe’ll be walking through grassy areas\, so waterproof boots or muck boots are strongly recommended. \nBecause parking at the pond is extremely limited\, we’ll meet at 7:30 AM at the Lincoln Park Shopping Center near the McDonald’s in Fayetteville (Address: 1410 Huntsville Hwy\, Fayetteville\, TN 37334; Coordinates: 35.13046\, -86.56586) and carpool the short 20-minute drive to the site. SUMMARY:November 1st - Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 1st – Duck River Unit\, Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge \nFor our November walk\, we will be guided by Daniel Redwine as we continue our annual tradition of \nvisiting the Duck River Unit just before its seasonal closure. This beautiful refuge is a prime birding \nspot in early November\, with large numbers of waterfowl already returned for the winter. With luck\, \nwe could spot up to 20 species of ducks and geese. Duck River is also a reliable location for winter- \ning raptors such as Bald Eagles\, Northern Harriers\, Red-tailed Hawks\, and perhaps a falcon or two. \nWe’ll also focus on sparrows\, with the potential to see at least 10 species. If conditions are favora- \nble\, we’ll possibly offer an optional “sparrow stomp” through marshy fields in hopes of flushing out \nLeConte’s Sparrow and other skulking species. \nCarpooling is highly encouraged for this trip due to limited parking and group coordination. For \nthose who wish to carpool\, please meet at the MTA Park-and-Ride in Bellevue and depart \npromptly at 6:15am\, or you can meet us directly at the refuge entrance (35.97407\, -87.95305) at \n8:00am. \nPlease dress in layers for the weather\, bring water and snacks\, and if you plan to participate in the \nsparrow stomp\, waterproof shoes or muck boots are strongly recommended. We expect to wrap up \nby mid-day or early afternoon. Come join us for one of the season’s best birding outings!

Ari Fremont\, a \npassionate young birder\, and his family have once again graciously invited us to explore their stun- \nning 45-acre private property nestled between Nolensville and Smyrna in southeastern Davidson \nCounty. \nThis time of year offers a fresh seasonal perspective\, with the farm’s mix of gardens\, woodlands\, \nand pastures providing excellent habitat for fall migrants. Ari will lead us on a guided walk through \nthe diverse landscape across their farmland. \nWe’ll begin at 7:00am. The address is 8856 Rocky Fork Road\, Smyrna\, TN 37167. Once on the \ndriveway\, pass the black barn and turn left up the gravel road to the back of the property where \nthere is ample parking and access to the trails. \nAfter the walk\, we’ll gather at the cabin for coffee and cookies. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 20th – Ravenwood/Lytle Park\, Nashville \nWe’ll explore Nashville’s newest park around the peak of fall migration. Last October’s field trip to Lytle proved very pop- \nular so we’ll visit again about a month earlier to search for a different assortment of migrants in this very under-birded \nspot. This will also allow us to check on the progress of the native prairie restoration work being done in partnership with \nThe Nature Conservancy. We will meet at 7:00am at the newly completed parking lot and playground in adjacent Rav- \nenwood Park in Hermitage\, which in and of itself boasts a nice array of habitat on the former golf course property. SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip - Saturday\,  June 7th
DESCRIPTION:Located in northern Sumner County\, Larkspur contains one of the finest examples of mature hardwood forest in our region\, and together with the adjacent Nature Conservancy property at Taylor Hollow they support large numbers breeding tanagers\, thrushes\, and warblers\, including Cerulean.  The area also contains a small cedar glade and several grassy fields which complete the habitat mosaic.  Larkspur is managed as a natural burial site\, and you will notice several memorial headstones throughout the park.  The gravel trails are well maintained\, but steep in places so sturdy footwear is a must and a hiking stick may come in handy.  We’ll meet at 7:00am on June 7th at the trailhead; the address is 155 Bear Carr Rd\, Westmoreland\, TN.  The gravel parking lot can only accommodate 8 to 10 cars\, so carpooling is highly encouraged – please make arrangements amongst yourselves.  A good meeting place is the Wal-Mart in Gallatin.

SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip - Saturday\, May 17th
DESCRIPTION:We will explore the fields and woods of Bells Bend Park in the hopes of locating not only all of the breeding birds found here (which include bobwhite\, buntings\, orioles\, chat\, yellowthroat\, Prairie and Blue-winged Warblers\, and in the last few years\, Dickcissel)\, but also some of the later migrating warblers\, flycatchers\, and grassland birds such as Bobolink that should be moving through during this time.  In order to maximize the number of birds seen and take advantage of cooler morning temps\, we’ll plan on an early start and cover at least 3 to 4 miles\, meaning this walk will be on the slightly more intense side.  We will meet at the visitor center on Saturday\, May 17th  at 6:00am.  Waterproof footwear and bug spray are highly recommended.
