SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip - Saturday\, May 17th
DESCRIPTION:We will explore the fields and woods of Bells Bend Park in the hopes of locating not only all of the breeding birds found here (which include bobwhite\, buntings\, orioles\, chat\, yellowthroat\, Prairie and Blue-winged Warblers\, and in the last few years\, Dickcissel)\, but also some of the later migrating warblers\, flycatchers\, and grassland birds such as Bobolink that should be moving through during this time.  In order to maximize the number of birds seen and take advantage of cooler morning temps\, we’ll plan on an early start and cover at least 3 to 4 miles\, meaning this walk will be on the slightly more intense side.  We will meet at the visitor center on Saturday\, May 17th  at 6:00am.  Waterproof footwear and bug spray are highly recommended.

DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a unique opportunity to explore the private property of Sarah Fremont and her avid birding son Ari on Saturday\, April 19th.  They have graciously offered to lead us on a guided birding walk of their 45 acre property in southeastern Davidson County between Nolensville and Smyrna.  It contains a mix of gardens\, woods\, and pastures which should be inviting to a large array of neotropical migrants.  At the conclusion of the walk\, cookies and coffee will be provided as well!  We will begin at 7:00am – the address is 8856 Rocky Fork Road\, Smyrna TN 37167.  Once to the driveway\, head past the black barn and turn left up the gravel road to the back of the property where there is ample parking and where the trails are located.  There is a small “cabin” where we will have coffee and cookies\, and which has bathrooms as well.

SUMMARY:Saturday\, March 29th - Henry Horton State Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Com join us in exploring a lesser known and under-birded destination by visiting Henry Horton State Park located about an hour south of Nashville.  TOS member Chris Stafford will be our guide as we focus our exploration on the west side of the park along the “Wetland Trail” which is a grassy path that winds through forests and fields containing a seasonal wetland along the shores of the Duck River (incidentally one of the most biodiverse rivers in the country).  We’ll have an optional climb to the top of an observation platform overlooking the river and surrounding forest.  Sparrow migration should be in full swing\, and we’ll also hope to welcome back some early neotropical migrants.  Time permitting and for those interested\, we can check out the nearby Lewisburg Reservoir after we wrap up at Henry Horton.  The trails can be muddy\, so boots or waterproof footwear is recommended.  We will meet at the main park visitors center at 7:30am and proceed to the trail from there. \n(Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net. DESCRIPTION:**Tentative** Saturday\, February 15th – Ft. Campbell Winter Trip: \nGiven that Ft. Campbell is an active military installation\, permissions can change rapidly and therefore this is atentative trip.  We will provide updates via TN-Birds\, Facebook\, and the NTOS website as we get closer to confirm if this field trip will take place.  We will join Daniel Moss for a winter field trip of the fort’s native tallgrass prairie\, which should be home to numerous wintering sparrows\, raptors\, and other grassland birds.  The main attraction will take place at sunset\, during which time we will search for Short-eared Owls which can typically be found wintering here in numbers.  As a result\, the field trip itself will begin at 2:00pm at the former Ft. Campbell hunting and fishing station parking lot located at the corner of Lafayette Rd. and 101st Airborne Division Rd. where we will meet up with Daniel.  For those looking to make a day of it\, feel free to visit some of the other Clarksville area hotspots such as Dunbar Cave State Park or Liberty Park & Marina beforehand. \nSpecial Notes regarding this trip – the trip is limited to 10 participants\, and will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.  NO cameras are permitted\, and I need to provide a list of names to Daniel ahead of time\, so if you wish to participate\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net with the heading “Ft. SUMMARY:Saturday\, January 25th – Wheeler NWR\, Decatur\, AL Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand!  Wheeler hosts one of the largest wintering concentrations of Sandhill Cranes in the world\, and it is also home to large numbers of ducks\, geese\, pelicans\, and gulls.  In addition to the hordes of Sandhill Cranes\, one of the main targets will be Whooping Cranes from the reestablished Central flyway population that breeds in Wisconsin\, several of which typically spend the winter at Wheeler (up to six have been reported this winter as of this writing).  After enjoying the crane show\, we will work our way around Wheeler Lake\, stopping to scan for waterbirds at several key locations as well as to grab lunch. SUMMARY:November Field Trip - Saturday the 9th - Duck River Unit of TNWR
DESCRIPTION:After a hiatus last fall\, we will pick back up with our annual tradition of visiting Duck River just before the seasonal closure of the refuge.  By mid-November\, lots of waterfowl should already have returned and we have a chance to spot up to 20 species.  Duck River also hosts a large population of wintering raptors and we’ll be on the lookout for eagles\, harriers\, hawks\, and falcons.  We will also keep an eye out for sparrows\, and we’ll have the chance to find at least 10 species – we will have an optional sparrow stomp though some marshy fields for LeConte’s sparrow and others.  For logistical reasons\, carpooling is highly encouraged.  We’ll meet at the MTA Park-and-Ride in Bellevue and leave at 6:15am; you can also meet us at the refuge entrance at 8:00am.  Please dress for the weather and bring plenty of water and snacks.  If you wish to participate in the sparrow stomp\, waterproof shoes or muck boots are highly recommended.  We should finish up around mid-day or early afternoon.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net  Please include “NTOS Field Trip” in the subject line.)

SUMMARY:Field Trip - October 12th - Lytle Park in Nashville
DESCRIPTION:Come explore Nashville’s newest addition to its already impressive park system!  Located at the confluence of the Cumberland and Stones River just a few miles east of downtown\, Lytle Park consists of roughly 600 acres of woodlands\, shrubby fields\, pastures\, and ponds. The property is situated in a large bend of the Stones River\, and is surrounded by rolling hills\, high bluffs\, and limestone shelves.  The former farm was purchased with help from The Nature Conservancy\, which is leading efforts to restore former cattle pastures to native grassland.  We will meet at 7:00am at the newly completed parking lot and playground in adjacent Ravenwood Park in Hermitage\, which in and of itself boasts a nice array of habitat on the former golf course property.  Trails are unimproved for the most part so sturdy shoes and bug spray are recommended. DESCRIPTION:September 14th – Shelby Bottoms (Phase 3 and Cornelia Fort) \nAs fall migration heats up\, we’ll check out one of the best spots in Nashville for weary migrants to rest and refuel.  We’ll meet at the Forrest Green Trailhead\, otherwise known as the entrance to Phase 3.  We will bird the paved path through the successional woodlands that run along the Cumberland River down to the Pedestrian bridge and back (about 2 miles).  Once back at the parking lot\, we’ll make the short drive over to Cornelia Fort Airpark and bird the grassy meadows and ponds of the area.  Depending on the mowing schedule\, the grass at Cornelia Fort can be tall\, so bug spray and boots are recommended for that portion of the walk (I usually change shoes when arriving at Cornelia Fort).  We’ll get started at 6:30am to take advantage of the cooler morning temps and should finish up by mid-morning.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net).

DESCRIPTION:We will explore the hills and hollows of Beaman Park for the breeding birds that call this lovely park home.  At least 8 warbler species\, 3 flycatchers\, both tanagers\, Wood Thrush\, and numerous other birds spend the summer months here and we will hike the Henry Hollow Loop in search of them all.  We will meet at 7:00am at the Creekside trailhead parking lot located off of Little Marrowbone Rd.  Please wear sturdy footwear as the trails can be muddy\, especially after it rains.  Parts of the hike involve some relatively steep ascents/descents as we work our way up and over the ridge\, but we will take our time\, looking and listening for birds along the way.  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net

DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand!  We will tour this 200+ acre working organic farm which is nestled along the Cumberland River right across from Bells Bend Park.  Featuring a mix of cedar forest\, upland hardwoods\, and large agricultural fields\, it forms a habitat mosaic that should attract a wide variety of birds.  We plan to hike around the entire property along a set of gravel and grass roads that visit these different habitats\, and the total distance traveled should be approx. 3 miles. SUMMARY:Saturday\, April 20th - Field Trip to Bowie Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Graham Gerdeman and Mike Smith for a visit to this under-birded gem in Williamson County.  Consisting of extensive stands of deciduous hardwoods and pine forests\, as well as several small lakes and ponds\, Bowie’s varied habitat should attract a good variety of birds\, especially as spring migration heats up in mid-April.  It is also one of the best places in the greater Nashville area to find Red-headed Woodpeckers\, Pine Warblers\, and Red-breasted Nuthatches.  We will hike several interconnected trails that pass through each of these habitats.  We will meet at 7:00am at picnic shelter #1 near Lake Van (just past the Nature Center).  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net.

SUMMARY:March 23\, 2024 - Bledsoe State Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Tim Loyd for an early spring outing to explore\nBledsoe Creek State Park located just east of Gallatin.\nBledsoe Creek packs a lot of different habitats into a rela-\ntively small area\, making it one of the top birding destina-\ntions in Sumner County. It contains a mix of bottomland\nforest\, a small marsh\, open water\, and upland forest\, all\neasily accessible via the network of trails that crisscross\nthe park. We will meet at 7:00 at the recently constructed\nvisitor center and start by working our way along the rela-\ntively flat lakeshore trail\, before heading up a short\, but\nsteep and somewhat strenuous incline to an area of up-\nland forest bordered by a large pasture. The trail then me-\nanders through the woods and ultimately back down to\nthe visitor center. The total distance is approx. 2.8 miles\nand we should wrap up late in the morning. DESCRIPTION:**Due to ROAD CONDITIONS AND weather this field trip to Pace Point has been CANCELLED.  Law Enforcement in the area reports that NO roads have been plowed past the Big Sandy Market and roads into the Refuge there are icy and snowpacked.  If you have any questions please contact Mike Smith – ms722@bellsouth.net and put ‘Field trip’ in the subject line.  Thank you for understanding.  \nCome join us for a trip to the Big Sandy unit of the Ten-\nnessee National Wildlife Refuge as we explore the many\nbays and inlets for wintering ducks\, geese\, loons\, and\ngulls as well as the surrounding uplands for raptors and\nsongbirds. An impressive number of rarities have oc-\ncurred at this location and it can hold staggering numbers\nof waterfowl and sparrows in the winter. All seven wood-\npecker species can be found with regularity\, and the open\nfields can be good for larks\, longspurs\, and pipits. This\narea is also fairly reliable for wintering Golden Eagle and\nLeConte’s Sparrow. We will meet at 8:00 am at the Suno-\nco Gas Station at the corner of Hwy 69A and Main St. in\nthe town of Big Sandy. For logistical reasons\, carpooling\nis highly encouraged to maximize everyone’s chances for\nseeing all the birds. For those wishing to carpool from\nNashville\, meet at the Bellevue Park-and-Ride and leave\nno later than 6:15 am. The outing should last through mid-\nafternoon with a lunch stop back in Big Sandy as we trav-\nel from Pace Point over to Britton Ford. SUMMARY:Field Trip - November 18th: Woods Reservoir Boat Tour (near Tullahoma)
DESCRIPTION:NTOS member Jeffrey Cowell has graciously offered to organize a boat tour of Woods Reservoir aboard his pontoon boat during mid-November\, which is right when waterfowl migration kicks into high gear.  We will spend several hours on the water searching for newly arriving migrants.  The trip is open to NTOS members\, and will be limited to 10 participants\, which will be filled on a first-come\, first serve basis.  We will go out on the water in two shifts so that everyone has a chance to participate.  The first group will go out at 9:00 am\, and the next group will go out at 12:30pm.  As participants sign up\, they will be added to one of the two trips\, and an email will be sent prior to the trip notifying everyone which trip they will be on.  The boat will leave from the Morris Ferry Boat Dock at 99-79 Morris Ferry Dock Rd\, Estill Springs\, TN.  A few notes: dress in layers; it can be much colder on the water. There are no restrooms on site although you can use Jeffrey’s camp if it’s an emergency.  If you have a life jacket\, please bring one.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net  Please include “Woods Reservoir Boat Trip” in the subject line.)
