SUMMARY:Field Trip - October 12th - Lytle Park in Nashville
DESCRIPTION:Come explore Nashville’s newest addition to its already impressive park system!  Located at the confluence of the Cumberland and Stones River just a few miles east of downtown\, Lytle Park consists of roughly 600 acres of woodlands\, shrubby fields\, pastures\, and ponds. The property is situated in a large bend of the Stones River\, and is surrounded by rolling hills\, high bluffs\, and limestone shelves.  The former farm was purchased with help from The Nature Conservancy\, which is leading efforts to restore former cattle pastures to native grassland.  We will meet at 7:00am at the newly completed parking lot and playground in adjacent Ravenwood Park in Hermitage\, which in and of itself boasts a nice array of habitat on the former golf course property.  Trails are unimproved for the most part so sturdy shoes and bug spray are recommended. SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip - new reschedule date.
DESCRIPTION:September 14th – Shelby Bottoms (Phase 3 and Cornelia Fort) \nAs fall migration heats up\, we’ll check out one of the best spots in Nashville for weary migrants to rest and refuel.  We’ll meet at the Forrest Green Trailhead\, otherwise known as the entrance to Phase 3.  We will bird the paved path through the successional woodlands that run along the Cumberland River down to the Pedestrian bridge and back (about 2 miles).  Once back at the parking lot\, we’ll make the short drive over to Cornelia Fort Airpark and bird the grassy meadows and ponds of the area.  Depending on the mowing schedule\, the grass at Cornelia Fort can be tall\, so bug spray and boots are recommended for that portion of the walk (I usually change shoes when arriving at Cornelia Fort).  We’ll get started at 6:30am to take advantage of the cooler morning temps and should finish up by mid-morning.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net).

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Saturday\, June 8th - Beaman Park
DESCRIPTION:We will explore the hills and hollows of Beaman Park for the breeding birds that call this lovely park home.  At least 8 warbler species\, 3 flycatchers\, both tanagers\, Wood Thrush\, and numerous other birds spend the summer months here and we will hike the Henry Hollow Loop in search of them all.  We will meet at 7:00am at the Creekside trailhead parking lot located off of Little Marrowbone Rd.  Please wear sturdy footwear as the trails can be muddy\, especially after it rains.  Parts of the hike involve some relatively steep ascents/descents as we work our way up and over the ridge\, but we will take our time\, looking and listening for birds along the way.  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net

SUMMARY:Field Trip - Saturday\, May 18th - Green Door Gourmet
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand!  We will tour this 200+ acre working organic farm which is nestled along the Cumberland River right across from Bells Bend Park.  Featuring a mix of cedar forest\, upland hardwoods\, and large agricultural fields\, it forms a habitat mosaic that should attract a wide variety of birds.  We plan to hike around the entire property along a set of gravel and grass roads that visit these different habitats\, and the total distance traveled should be approx. 3 miles. SUMMARY:Saturday\, April 20th - Field Trip to Bowie Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Graham Gerdeman and Mike Smith for a visit to this under-birded gem in Williamson County.  Consisting of extensive stands of deciduous hardwoods and pine forests\, as well as several small lakes and ponds\, Bowie’s varied habitat should attract a good variety of birds\, especially as spring migration heats up in mid-April.  It is also one of the best places in the greater Nashville area to find Red-headed Woodpeckers\, Pine Warblers\, and Red-breasted Nuthatches.  We will hike several interconnected trails that pass through each of these habitats.  We will meet at 7:00am at picnic shelter #1 near Lake Van (just past the Nature Center).  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net.

SUMMARY:March 23\, 2024 - Bledsoe State Park Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Tim Loyd for an early spring outing to explore\nBledsoe Creek State Park located just east of Gallatin.\nBledsoe Creek packs a lot of different habitats into a rela-\ntively small area\, making it one of the top birding destina-\ntions in Sumner County. It contains a mix of bottomland\nforest\, a small marsh\, open water\, and upland forest\, all\neasily accessible via the network of trails that crisscross\nthe park. We will meet at 7:00 at the recently constructed\nvisitor center and start by working our way along the rela-\ntively flat lakeshore trail\, before heading up a short\, but\nsteep and somewhat strenuous incline to an area of up-\nland forest bordered by a large pasture. The trail then me-\nanders through the woods and ultimately back down to\nthe visitor center. The total distance is approx. 2.8 miles\nand we should wrap up late in the morning. DESCRIPTION:**Due to ROAD CONDITIONS AND weather this field trip to Pace Point has been CANCELLED.  Law Enforcement in the area reports that NO roads have been plowed past the Big Sandy Market and roads into the Refuge there are icy and snowpacked.  If you have any questions please contact Mike Smith – ms722@bellsouth.net and put ‘Field trip’ in the subject line.  Thank you for understanding.  \nCome join us for a trip to the Big Sandy unit of the Ten-\nnessee National Wildlife Refuge as we explore the many\nbays and inlets for wintering ducks\, geese\, loons\, and\ngulls as well as the surrounding uplands for raptors and\nsongbirds. An impressive number of rarities have oc-\ncurred at this location and it can hold staggering numbers\nof waterfowl and sparrows in the winter. All seven wood-\npecker species can be found with regularity\, and the open\nfields can be good for larks\, longspurs\, and pipits. This\narea is also fairly reliable for wintering Golden Eagle and\nLeConte’s Sparrow. We will meet at 8:00 am at the Suno-\nco Gas Station at the corner of Hwy 69A and Main St. in\nthe town of Big Sandy. For logistical reasons\, carpooling\nis highly encouraged to maximize everyone’s chances for\nseeing all the birds. For those wishing to carpool from\nNashville\, meet at the Bellevue Park-and-Ride and leave\nno later than 6:15 am. The outing should last through mid-\nafternoon with a lunch stop back in Big Sandy as we trav-\nel from Pace Point over to Britton Ford. DESCRIPTION:NTOS member Jeffrey Cowell has graciously offered to organize a boat tour of Woods Reservoir aboard his pontoon boat during mid-November\, which is right when waterfowl migration kicks into high gear.  We will spend several hours on the water searching for newly arriving migrants.  The trip is open to NTOS members\, and will be limited to 10 participants\, which will be filled on a first-come\, first serve basis.  We will go out on the water in two shifts so that everyone has a chance to participate.  The first group will go out at 9:00 am\, and the next group will go out at 12:30pm.  As participants sign up\, they will be added to one of the two trips\, and an email will be sent prior to the trip notifying everyone which trip they will be on.  The boat will leave from the Morris Ferry Boat Dock at 99-79 Morris Ferry Dock Rd\, Estill Springs\, TN.  A few notes: dress in layers; it can be much colder on the water. There are no restrooms on site although you can use Jeffrey’s camp if it’s an emergency.  If you have a life jacket\, please bring one.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net  Please include “Woods Reservoir Boat Trip” in the subject line.)

SUMMARY:OCTOBER 28th FIELD TRIP - Green Door Gourmet\, Nashville
DESCRIPTION:We will tour this 200+ acre working organic farm which is nestled along the Cumberland River right across from Bells Bend Park.  Featuring a mix of cedar forest\, upland hardwoods\, and large agricultural fields\, it forms a habitat mosaic that should attract a wide variety of birds.  We plan to hike around the entire property along a set of gravel and grass roads that visit these different habitats\, and the total distance traveled should be approx. 3 miles.  We have timed this trip to coincide with the peak of fall sparrow migration and plan to spend the bulk of our time exploring the open fields along the river. SUMMARY:Saturday April 15th - Field trip to Vesta Cedar Glade\, Rutherford County
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 15th – Birds\, Butterflies\, and Blooms – Vesta Cedar Glade\, Rutherford County \nCome join Richard Connors and Mike Smith for a naturalist experience in one of the most unique ecosystems in Tennessee – the cedar glade!  Cedar glades are characterized by shallow\, rocky soils which limits the growth of most woody plants\, and the resulting plant community contains mainly cedar trees interspersed with open rocky glades that support many species of rare wildflowers\, a few of which are found nowhere else on earth.  Consequently\, many interesting birds and butterflies call this ecosystem home\, from breeding Prairie Warblers and Common Nighthawks to butterflies such as Southern Dogface and Juniper Hairstreak.  We will explore all facets of this ecosystem on our outing.  In order to give the butterflies a chance to warm up a bit\, we’ll meet at 9:00am:  from I-840 in Rutherford Co\, take Exit 67 and turn east (toward the Love’s Truck Stop) and travel 1.6 miles along Vesta Rd.  Turn left onto Moccasin Ln and travel 1 mile to the entrance (small parking lot on the left).  Navigating to “Vesta Cedar Glade” using Google Maps will take you right there.  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net.

SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip to Robertson County with Tony Lance - February 18th
DESCRIPTION:Come join our annual tradition of winter birding in Robertson County!  There are thousands of acres of rolling farmland home to Horned Larks and Eastern Meadowlarks year around which are joined in the winter by American Pipits\, Lapland Longspurs\, numerous sparrows (including White-crowned\, Savannah\, and occasionally Vesper)\, Loggerhead Shrikes\, and Merlin.  We will explore several quiet\, infrequently traveled farm roads by car looking for these species. We will also pass several farm ponds and small lakes where we’ll be sure to look for wintering waterfowl.  We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Sudden Service gas station/Dunkin’ Donuts at Exit 24 (Pleasant View/Springfield) on I-24 where we will join our expert trip leader\, Tony Lance. The outing should finish around mid-day\, so be sure to bring a snack and water and dress warmly. Some may want to meet in Nashville in the lower parking lot of the Adventure Science Center to carpool to the field trip site. SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip - Crooked Branch and Peeler Park - January 21st
DESCRIPTION:Part of Nashville’s impressive greenway system\, these two smaller and perhaps under-birded parks are both located close to one another in northern Davidson County making them ideal to explore together.  Crooked Branch contains a seasonal wetland\, and if conditions are right hosts large numbers of wintering waterfowl.  It also has a one-mile paved loop trail through successional forest habitat which can be good for sparrows and local winter residents.  Peeler Park lies at the “bottom” of Neely’s Bend and contains a mix of overgrown fields and woods\, and is very reminiscent of Shelby Bottoms.  We will meet at the Crooked Branch parking lot at 7:00 a.m. (116 Ray Ave\, Lakewood\, TN).  The parking lot is very small\, so carpooling is highly encouraged. Once we finish up there\, we’ll make the short drive over to Peeler Park where we will meet at the Menees Ln. trailhead.  We should finish up around lunchtime. SUMMARY:NOVEMBER 12th - FIELD TRIP TO THE DUCK RIVER
DESCRIPTION:We will continue our annual tradition of visiting Duck River just before the seasonal closure of the refuge.  By mid-November\, hordes of geese and ducks should be returning to the refuge\, and we have the chance to spot over 20 species.  Duck River also hosts a large population of wintering raptors and we’ll be on the lookout for eagles\, harriers\, hawks\, and falcons.  Duck River is also very good for sparrows\, and we’ll have the chance to find at least 10 species – we will have an optional sparrow stomp though some marshy fields for LeConte’s sparrow and others.  For logistical reasons\, carpooling is highly encouraged.  We’ll meet at the MTA Park-and-Ride in Bellevue and leave at 6:15am; you can also meet us at the refuge entrance at 8:00am.  Please dress for the weather and bring plenty of water and snacks.  If you wish to participate in the sparrow stomp\, waterproof shoes or muck boots are highly recommended.  We should finish up around mid-day or early afternoon.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net  Please include “NTOS Field Trip” in the subject line.)

SUMMARY:OCTOBER 15th - FIELD TRIP TO BELLS BEND
DESCRIPTION:Fall is a great time to explore the overgrown fields and forest edges of Bells Bend Park.  Bells Bend is a premier location for sparrows\, and by mid-October\, we should encounter several species as they are either migrating through or returning to spend the winter.  We’ll also search for any lingering neotropical migrants.  The morning will consist of a leisurely hike along the mowed paths as we start at the Outdoor Center\, then make a loop around several of the large overgrown fields\, and then back to the center.  We will meet at 7:00am and we should be done by lunchtime. SUMMARY:September Field Trip - Saturday\, September 10th
