DESCRIPTION:**Due to ROAD CONDITIONS AND weather this field trip to Pace Point has been CANCELLED.  Law Enforcement in the area reports that NO roads have been plowed past the Big Sandy Market and roads into the Refuge there are icy and snowpacked.  If you have any questions please contact Mike Smith – ms722@bellsouth.net and put ‘Field trip’ in the subject line.  Thank you for understanding.  \nCome join us for a trip to the Big Sandy unit of the Ten-\nnessee National Wildlife Refuge as we explore the many\nbays and inlets for wintering ducks\, geese\, loons\, and\ngulls as well as the surrounding uplands for raptors and\nsongbirds. An impressive number of rarities have oc-\ncurred at this location and it can hold staggering numbers\nof waterfowl and sparrows in the winter. All seven wood-\npecker species can be found with regularity\, and the open\nfields can be good for larks\, longspurs\, and pipits. This\narea is also fairly reliable for wintering Golden Eagle and\nLeConte’s Sparrow. We will meet at 8:00 am at the Suno-\nco Gas Station at the corner of Hwy 69A and Main St. in\nthe town of Big Sandy. For logistical reasons\, carpooling\nis highly encouraged to maximize everyone’s chances for\nseeing all the birds. For those wishing to carpool from\nNashville\, meet at the Bellevue Park-and-Ride and leave\nno later than 6:15 am. The outing should last through mid-\nafternoon with a lunch stop back in Big Sandy as we trav-\nel from Pace Point over to Britton Ford. SUMMARY:Field Trip - November 18th: Woods Reservoir Boat Tour (near Tullahoma)
DESCRIPTION:NTOS member Jeffrey Cowell has graciously offered to organize a boat tour of Woods Reservoir aboard his pontoon boat during mid-November\, which is right when waterfowl migration kicks into high gear.  We will spend several hours on the water searching for newly arriving migrants.  The trip is open to NTOS members\, and will be limited to 10 participants\, which will be filled on a first-come\, first serve basis.  We will go out on the water in two shifts so that everyone has a chance to participate.  The first group will go out at 9:00 am\, and the next group will go out at 12:30pm.  As participants sign up\, they will be added to one of the two trips\, and an email will be sent prior to the trip notifying everyone which trip they will be on.  The boat will leave from the Morris Ferry Boat Dock at 99-79 Morris Ferry Dock Rd\, Estill Springs\, TN.  A few notes: dress in layers; it can be much colder on the water. There are no restrooms on site although you can use Jeffrey’s camp if it’s an emergency.  If you have a life jacket\, please bring one.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net  Please include “Woods Reservoir Boat Trip” in the subject line.)

SUMMARY:OCTOBER 28th FIELD TRIP - Green Door Gourmet\, Nashville
DESCRIPTION:We will tour this 200+ acre working organic farm which is nestled along the Cumberland River right across from Bells Bend Park.  Featuring a mix of cedar forest\, upland hardwoods\, and large agricultural fields\, it forms a habitat mosaic that should attract a wide variety of birds.  We plan to hike around the entire property along a set of gravel and grass roads that visit these different habitats\, and the total distance traveled should be approx. 3 miles.  We have timed this trip to coincide with the peak of fall sparrow migration and plan to spend the bulk of our time exploring the open fields along the river. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 15th – Birds\, Butterflies\, and Blooms – Vesta Cedar Glade\, Rutherford County \nCome join Richard Connors and Mike Smith for a naturalist experience in one of the most unique ecosystems in Tennessee – the cedar glade!  Cedar glades are characterized by shallow\, rocky soils which limits the growth of most woody plants\, and the resulting plant community contains mainly cedar trees interspersed with open rocky glades that support many species of rare wildflowers\, a few of which are found nowhere else on earth.  Consequently\, many interesting birds and butterflies call this ecosystem home\, from breeding Prairie Warblers and Common Nighthawks to butterflies such as Southern Dogface and Juniper Hairstreak.  We will explore all facets of this ecosystem on our outing.  In order to give the butterflies a chance to warm up a bit\, we’ll meet at 9:00am:  from I-840 in Rutherford Co\, take Exit 67 and turn east (toward the Love’s Truck Stop) and travel 1.6 miles along Vesta Rd.  Turn left onto Moccasin Ln and travel 1 mile to the entrance (small parking lot on the left).  Navigating to “Vesta Cedar Glade” using Google Maps will take you right there.  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net.

SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip to Robertson County with Tony Lance - February 18th
DESCRIPTION:Come join our annual tradition of winter birding in Robertson County!  There are thousands of acres of rolling farmland home to Horned Larks and Eastern Meadowlarks year around which are joined in the winter by American Pipits\, Lapland Longspurs\, numerous sparrows (including White-crowned\, Savannah\, and occasionally Vesper)\, Loggerhead Shrikes\, and Merlin.  We will explore several quiet\, infrequently traveled farm roads by car looking for these species. We will also pass several farm ponds and small lakes where we’ll be sure to look for wintering waterfowl.  We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Sudden Service gas station/Dunkin’ Donuts at Exit 24 (Pleasant View/Springfield) on I-24 where we will join our expert trip leader\, Tony Lance. The outing should finish around mid-day\, so be sure to bring a snack and water and dress warmly. Some may want to meet in Nashville in the lower parking lot of the Adventure Science Center to carpool to the field trip site. SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip - Crooked Branch and Peeler Park - January 21st
DESCRIPTION:Part of Nashville’s impressive greenway system\, these two smaller and perhaps under-birded parks are both located close to one another in northern Davidson County making them ideal to explore together.  Crooked Branch contains a seasonal wetland\, and if conditions are right hosts large numbers of wintering waterfowl.  It also has a one-mile paved loop trail through successional forest habitat which can be good for sparrows and local winter residents.  Peeler Park lies at the “bottom” of Neely’s Bend and contains a mix of overgrown fields and woods\, and is very reminiscent of Shelby Bottoms.  We will meet at the Crooked Branch parking lot at 7:00 a.m. (116 Ray Ave\, Lakewood\, TN).  The parking lot is very small\, so carpooling is highly encouraged. Once we finish up there\, we’ll make the short drive over to Peeler Park where we will meet at the Menees Ln. trailhead.  We should finish up around lunchtime. DESCRIPTION:We will continue our annual tradition of visiting Duck River just before the seasonal closure of the refuge.  By mid-November\, hordes of geese and ducks should be returning to the refuge\, and we have the chance to spot over 20 species.  Duck River also hosts a large population of wintering raptors and we’ll be on the lookout for eagles\, harriers\, hawks\, and falcons.  Duck River is also very good for sparrows\, and we’ll have the chance to find at least 10 species – we will have an optional sparrow stomp though some marshy fields for LeConte’s sparrow and others.  For logistical reasons\, carpooling is highly encouraged.  We’ll meet at the MTA Park-and-Ride in Bellevue and leave at 6:15am; you can also meet us at the refuge entrance at 8:00am.  Please dress for the weather and bring plenty of water and snacks.  If you wish to participate in the sparrow stomp\, waterproof shoes or muck boots are highly recommended.  We should finish up around mid-day or early afternoon.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net  Please include “NTOS Field Trip” in the subject line.)

SUMMARY:OCTOBER 15th - FIELD TRIP TO BELLS BEND
DESCRIPTION:Fall is a great time to explore the overgrown fields and forest edges of Bells Bend Park.  Bells Bend is a premier location for sparrows\, and by mid-October\, we should encounter several species as they are either migrating through or returning to spend the winter.  We’ll also search for any lingering neotropical migrants.  The morning will consist of a leisurely hike along the mowed paths as we start at the Outdoor Center\, then make a loop around several of the large overgrown fields\, and then back to the center.  We will meet at 7:00am and we should be done by lunchtime. SUMMARY:September Field Trip - Saturday\, September 10th

SUMMARY:Saturday\, May 28th - Fort Campbell with Daniel Moss
DESCRIPTION:**Recent geopolitical events have made this a tentative trip as this field trip takes place on an active military installation.  We will provide updates via TN-Birds\, Facebook\, and the NTOS website as we get closer to confirm if this field trip will take place. \nCome join Daniel Moss as he leads us through the back country of Fort Campbell in search of the special species that call this active army post home.  Fort Campbell offers unique habitats within our region the most notable of which is one of the largest remaining tracts of native tallgrass prairie in the eastern U.S.\, known as The Barrens\, and part of the vast Pennyroyal Plain which once covered approximately 3.7 million acres of western Kentucky and north central Tennessee.  In addition to the expected breeding birds\, our main targets will be Bell’s Vireo\, Henslow’s Sparrow\, Grasshopper Sparrow\, Dickcissel\, and perhaps even Bachman’s Sparrow.  The trip should last about half the day.  Please dress for the weather\, and make sure to bring plenty of water and insect repellent! \nWe will meet at 7:00 a.m. at the former Ft. Campbell hunting and fishing station parking lot located at the corner of Lafayette Rd. and 101st Airborne Division Rd. where we will meet up with Daniel.  DO NOT proceed to any of the birding destinations on your own. \nSpecial Notes regarding this trip – the trip is limited to 10 participants\, and will be filled on a first-come first-serve basis.  I will begin with those who were on the waitlist from last year.  NO cameras are permitted\, and I need to provide a list of names to Daniel ahead of time\, so if you wish to participate\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net with the heading “Ft. SUMMARY:May 14th Field Trip - Larkspur Conservation Area
DESCRIPTION:Come join Tim Loyd as he leads us on a tour of a relatively new birding hotspot in northern Sumner County.  As part of the Highland Rim\, Larkspur contains one of the finest examples of mature hardwood forest in our region\, and together with the adjacent Nature Conservancy property at Taylor Hollow they support one of the highest densities of breeding Cerulean Warblers in Middle Tennessee along with large numbers of other forest breeders.  The area also contains a cedar glade and several grassy fields\, and this habitat diversity supports a high variety of warblers\, thrushes\, tanagers\, and other neotropical migrants.  Larkspur is managed as a natural burial site\, and you will notice several memorial headstones throughout the park.  The gravel trails are well maintained\, but steep in places so sturdy footwear is a must and a hiking stick may come in handy.  We’ll meet at 7:00am at the trailhead; the address is 155 Bear Carr Rd\, Westmoreland\, TN.  From Gallatin\, take Hwy 31E north for approx. 15 miles and turn right onto Phillip Hollow Rd.  After 1.2 miles turn left on Bear Carr Rd; the parking lot is 2 tenths of a mile on the left.  There is a tour of the burial site at 10:00am on the same day\, and the gravel parking lot can only accommodate 8 to 10 cars\, so carpooling will be essential – please make arrangements amongst yourselves.  A good meeting place is the Wal-Mart in Gallatin.  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net

SUMMARY:April 16th Field Trip - Burch Reserve at Warner Parks
DESCRIPTION:By mid-April\, many neotropical migrants will be arriving back in Middle Tennessee; some will stay to breed\, while others will continue their northward journey to more northern latitudes.  Come join Graham Gerdeman as we seek out these new arrivals at one of Nashville’s hidden gems:  The Burch Reserve.  Part of the greater Warner Parks system\, it includes overgrown fields\, wooded hollows\, and high ridgetops\, and has been somewhat overlooked by birders since it’s acquisition in 2009.  We will meet at 7:00 am at the trailhead parking lot located at the intersection of Hwy 100 and Old Hickory Blvd. Please wear sturdy footwear as parts of the 2-mile hike involve some relatively steep ascents/descents as we work our way up and down the ridge\, but we will take our time\, looking and listening for birds along the way.  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net.

SUMMARY:February Field Trip - February 19\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Come join us as we explore the beautiful pastoral landscape of Robertson County in search of the special wintering birds that are found in this unique habitat.  There are thousands of acres of rolling farmland home to Horned Larks and Eastern Meadowlarks year around which are joined in the winter by American Pipits\, Lapland Longspurs\, numerous sparrows (including White-crowned\, Savannah\, and occasionally Vesper)\, Loggerhead Shrikes\, and Merlin.  We will explore several quiet\, infrequently traveled farm roads by car looking for these species. We will also pass several farm ponds and small lakes where we’ll be sure to look for wintering waterfowl.  We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Sudden Service gas station/Dunkin’ Doughnuts at Exit 24 (Pleasant View/Springfield) on I-24 where we will join our expert trip leader\, Tony Lance. The outing should finish around mid-day\, so be sure to bring a snack and water and dress warmly. Some may want to meet in Nashville in the lower parking lot of the Adventure Science Center to carpool to the field trip site. SUMMARY:January Field Trip - January 22\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Just over an hour and a half south of Nashville (and a straight shot down I-65)\, lies Wheeler NWR in Decatur\, AL. Positioned at the southern end of the U-shaped Tennessee River Valley\, it is a key wintering site for waterbirds.  Long famous for its staggering numbers of wintering Sandhill Cranes\, it is also home to large numbers of ducks\, geese\, white pelicans\, and gulls.   One of the main targets will be Whooping Crane\, several of which can typically be found amongst the horde of Sandhills and at least six individuals are currently present as of this writing.  After enjoying the crane show\, we will work our way around Wheeler Lake\, stopping to scan at several key locations as well as to grab lunch. We will meet at the Wheeler Visitor’s Center at 9:00 a.m.\, For those wishing to carpool from Nashville (which is highly encouraged) a good meeting place is the lower parking lot of the Adventure Science Center.  Please introduce yourselves and be ready to leave by 7:15.  Please note that masks are required to enter the refuge visitor’s center and observation tower regardless of vaccination status\, and that they currently only accept cash or checks for those wishing to purchase something from the gift shop. \n(Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net.
