SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip - Bells Bend Park - March 25th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an early spring outing as we explore the overgrown fields and pastures of Bells Bend Park.  We’ll begin just before dawn at Bells Bend Park to look and listen for owls and American Woodcock\, the males of which hopefully will still be “peenting” and displaying their way into the hearts of the females just before dawn.  Once things lighten up\, we’ll meander along the trails in search of sparrows\, waterfowl\, Northern Harrier\, and other early spring arrivals.  We’ll meet at 5:30 a.m. at the Poplar Creek trailhead (the FIRST park entrance) for the pre-dawn portion of our trip.  For those wishing to sleep in a bit\, you can join us around 7:00 at the nature center parking lot (the SECOND park entrance) for the daytime portion of our trip. SUMMARY:Saturday April 15th - Field trip to Vesta Cedar Glade\, Rutherford County
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 15th – Birds\, Butterflies\, and Blooms – Vesta Cedar Glade\, Rutherford County \nCome join Richard Connors and Mike Smith for a naturalist experience in one of the most unique ecosystems in Tennessee – the cedar glade!  Cedar glades are characterized by shallow\, rocky soils which limits the growth of most woody plants\, and the resulting plant community contains mainly cedar trees interspersed with open rocky glades that support many species of rare wildflowers\, a few of which are found nowhere else on earth.  Consequently\, many interesting birds and butterflies call this ecosystem home\, from breeding Prairie Warblers and Common Nighthawks to butterflies such as Southern Dogface and Juniper Hairstreak.  We will explore all facets of this ecosystem on our outing.  In order to give the butterflies a chance to warm up a bit\, we’ll meet at 9:00am:  from I-840 in Rutherford Co\, take Exit 67 and turn east (toward the Love’s Truck Stop) and travel 1.6 miles along Vesta Rd.  Turn left onto Moccasin Ln and travel 1 mile to the entrance (small parking lot on the left).  Navigating to “Vesta Cedar Glade” using Google Maps will take you right there.  For additional information\, please email ms722@bellsouth.net.

SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip to Robertson County with Tony Lance - February 18th
DESCRIPTION:Come join our annual tradition of winter birding in Robertson County!  There are thousands of acres of rolling farmland home to Horned Larks and Eastern Meadowlarks year around which are joined in the winter by American Pipits\, Lapland Longspurs\, numerous sparrows (including White-crowned\, Savannah\, and occasionally Vesper)\, Loggerhead Shrikes\, and Merlin.  We will explore several quiet\, infrequently traveled farm roads by car looking for these species. We will also pass several farm ponds and small lakes where we’ll be sure to look for wintering waterfowl.  We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the Sudden Service gas station/Dunkin’ Donuts at Exit 24 (Pleasant View/Springfield) on I-24 where we will join our expert trip leader\, Tony Lance. The outing should finish around mid-day\, so be sure to bring a snack and water and dress warmly. Some may want to meet in Nashville in the lower parking lot of the Adventure Science Center to carpool to the field trip site. SUMMARY:NTOS Field Trip - Crooked Branch and Peeler Park - January 21st
DESCRIPTION:Part of Nashville’s impressive greenway system\, these two smaller and perhaps under-birded parks are both located close to one another in northern Davidson County making them ideal to explore together.  Crooked Branch contains a seasonal wetland\, and if conditions are right hosts large numbers of wintering waterfowl.  It also has a one-mile paved loop trail through successional forest habitat which can be good for sparrows and local winter residents.  Peeler Park lies at the “bottom” of Neely’s Bend and contains a mix of overgrown fields and woods\, and is very reminiscent of Shelby Bottoms.  We will meet at the Crooked Branch parking lot at 7:00 a.m. (116 Ray Ave\, Lakewood\, TN).  The parking lot is very small\, so carpooling is highly encouraged. Once we finish up there\, we’ll make the short drive over to Peeler Park where we will meet at the Menees Ln. trailhead.  We should finish up around lunchtime. SUMMARY:NOVEMBER 12th - FIELD TRIP TO THE DUCK RIVER
DESCRIPTION:We will continue our annual tradition of visiting Duck River just before the seasonal closure of the refuge.  By mid-November\, hordes of geese and ducks should be returning to the refuge\, and we have the chance to spot over 20 species.  Duck River also hosts a large population of wintering raptors and we’ll be on the lookout for eagles\, harriers\, hawks\, and falcons.  Duck River is also very good for sparrows\, and we’ll have the chance to find at least 10 species – we will have an optional sparrow stomp though some marshy fields for LeConte’s sparrow and others.  For logistical reasons\, carpooling is highly encouraged.  We’ll meet at the MTA Park-and-Ride in Bellevue and leave at 6:15am; you can also meet us at the refuge entrance at 8:00am.  Please dress for the weather and bring plenty of water and snacks.  If you wish to participate in the sparrow stomp\, waterproof shoes or muck boots are highly recommended.  We should finish up around mid-day or early afternoon.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net  Please include “NTOS Field Trip” in the subject line.)

SUMMARY:OCTOBER 15th - FIELD TRIP TO BELLS BEND
DESCRIPTION:Fall is a great time to explore the overgrown fields and forest edges of Bells Bend Park.  Bells Bend is a premier location for sparrows\, and by mid-October\, we should encounter several species as they are either migrating through or returning to spend the winter.  We’ll also search for any lingering neotropical migrants.  The morning will consist of a leisurely hike along the mowed paths as we start at the Outdoor Center\, then make a loop around several of the large overgrown fields\, and then back to the center.  We will meet at 7:00am and we should be done by lunchtime. DESCRIPTION:The final of four NTOS Wednesday morning Radnor Lake Bird walks will take place on Wednesday\, October 12th.  This season marks the start of our 45th year doing continuous Wednesday walks.  NTOS member and volunteer Stacy Elliot will be leading the charge that morning.  Meet Stacy BY 7:30 am at the base of the Radnor Visitor’s Center parking lot by the kiosks. \nFrom there the group will set off up the road and across the spillway and then up the trail to Long Bridge where the walk will officially end.  If you’re late in arriving join us anywhere along this route.  The bird list will be published on tn-bird.org at the conclusion of the walk. \nYou do not have to be a member of NTOS to join us\, but we’d certainly love to have you become a member of our Chapter.  So join us\, rain or shine\, (storms are a different story and cancellations will be posted on the NTOS FB page if they occur.)

DESCRIPTION:The third of four NTOS Wednesday morning Radnor Lake Bird walks will take place on Wednesday\, October 5th.  This season marks the start of our 45th year doing continuous Wednesday walks.  NTOS member and volunteer Finn Goodwin-Bain will be leading the charge that morning.  Meet Finn BY 7:30 am at the base of the Radnor Visitor’s Center parking lot by the kiosks. \nFrom there the group will set off up the road and across the spillway and then up the trail to Long Bridge where the walk will officially end.  If you’re late in arriving join us anywhere along this route.  The bird list will be published on tn-bird.org at the conclusion of the walk. \nYou do not have to be a member of NTOS to join us\, but we’d certainly love to have you become a member of our Chapter.  So join us\, rain or shine\, (storms are a different story and cancellations will be posted on the NTOS FB page if they occur.)

DESCRIPTION:We hope that you will join other members of NTOS for our annual fall count.  This important citizen science project allows us to track long-term population trends of species and can be a vital part of making informed conservation decisions…and the best part – no experience is necessary\, just bring your enthusiasm and a pair of binoculars!  There are routes all around town\, including Old Hickory Lake\, Shelby Park and Bottoms\, Radnor Lake\, Bells Bend\, etc… so pick a count that makes sense for you and count for as long as you you’d like.  For those interested\, please contact Barbara Harris at harrbarbara@bellsouth.net so she can put you in touch with the route leader for the count of your choice.

SUMMARY:September Field Trip - Saturday\, September 10th
DESCRIPTION:As anyone familiar with Middle Tennessee’s avifauna knows\, the Duck River unit of the Tennessee NWR is one of the top birding hotspots in the region.  By early September\, shorebird migration should be in full swing\, and wading birds (herons and egrets) should still be present in good numbers.  Land bird migration should be ticking up as well\, and of course there’s always a chance for a rarity or two.  We will slowly drive around the refuge loop stopping often to scan various pools\, bays\, and pastures for birds.  For logistical reasons\, carpooling is highly encouraged.  We’ll meet at the MTA Park-and-Ride in Bellevue at 6:15am or you can meet us at the refuge entrance at 8:00am.  Please dress for the (hot) weather and bring plenty of water and snacks.  We should finish up in the early afternoon.  (Contact information: ms722@bellsouth.net  Please include “NTOS Field Trip” in the subject line.)
