SUMMARY:November 1st - Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 1st – Duck River Unit\, Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge \nFor our November walk\, we will be guided by Daniel Redwine as we continue our annual tradition of \nvisiting the Duck River Unit just before its seasonal closure. This beautiful refuge is a prime birding \nspot in early November\, with large numbers of waterfowl already returned for the winter. With luck\, \nwe could spot up to 20 species of ducks and geese. Duck River is also a reliable location for winter- \ning raptors such as Bald Eagles\, Northern Harriers\, Red-tailed Hawks\, and perhaps a falcon or two. \nWe’ll also focus on sparrows\, with the potential to see at least 10 species. If conditions are favora- \nble\, we’ll possibly offer an optional “sparrow stomp” through marshy fields in hopes of flushing out \nLeConte’s Sparrow and other skulking species. \nCarpooling is highly encouraged for this trip due to limited parking and group coordination. For \nthose who wish to carpool\, please meet at the MTA Park-and-Ride in Bellevue and depart \npromptly at 6:15am\, or you can meet us directly at the refuge entrance (35.97407\, -87.95305) at \n8:00am. \nPlease dress in layers for the weather\, bring water and snacks\, and if you plan to participate in the \nsparrow stomp\, waterproof shoes or muck boots are strongly recommended. We expect to wrap up \nby mid-day or early afternoon. Come join us for one of the season’s best birding outings!

Membership in NTOS is not required.\n\nIn July of 2024\, Jon May and his traveling companions embarked on a two-week trip taking them from north to south through Brazil’s Pantanal\, the vast UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in central South America.  The expedition concluded with a three-day visit to Iguazu Falls\, certainly one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls. Please join us as Jon shares a photographic sampling of the dazzling variety of birds and wildlife encountered throughout the Pantanal\, including Jaguar\, Hyacinth Macaw\, Crested Caracara\, Jabiru Stork\, Giant River Otter\, and Giant Anteater.\n\nJon May is a long-time member of NTOS – probably since the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. He has had a lifelong interest in outdoor activities\, travel\, and nature photography. Since retirement eleven years ago he has been fortunate to be able to pursue those interests more actively. Jon\, his wife\, and daughter have traveled extensively in natural areas and parks  in the US\, in Africa\, and in Central and South America.

SUMMARY:February 14th - Field trip to Fowler Rd Irrigation Pond - Lincoln County
DESCRIPTION:What better way to brighten up chilly February than with two NTOS field trips on the calendar? \nFirst up: Saturday\, February 14th\, when we’ll head to one of Tennessee’s premier birding hotspots\, the Fowler Road Irrigation Pond. Trip leader Avery Fish knows this site very well and has turned up an impressive list of species here over the years. \nOur targets for the morning include a great mix of waterfowl and sparrows\, with possibilities like LeConte’s Sparrow\, Western Meadowlark\, Longspurs\, and Short-eared Owl. \nWe’ll be walking through grassy areas\, so waterproof boots or muck boots are strongly recommended. \nBecause parking at the pond is extremely limited\, we’ll meet at 7:30 AM at the Lincoln Park Shopping Center near the McDonald’s in Fayetteville (Address: 1410 Huntsville Hwy\, Fayetteville\, TN 37334; Coordinates: 35.13046\, -86.56586) and carpool the short 20-minute drive to the site. If you have a vehicle that can comfortably transport other participants\, please bring it; carpooling is essential for this trip. \nFor questions\, contact Shelley Smith at wkusmith@gmail.com and include “NTOS Field Trip” in the subject line. \nBundle up and join us for what promises to be a fantastic winter outing! \nPlease note: This field trip may be canceled if hazardous weather conditions arise. Any cancellations will be announced as soon as possible on the TN-Bird Listserv and NTOS’s social media accounts.

SUMMARY:NTOS Monthly meeting - FEBRUARY 19th - CANCELLED DUE TO STORM DAMAGE AND SUBSEQUENT CLEAN-UP!
DESCRIPTION:The FEBRUARY MEETING of the Nashville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society (NTOS) has been CANCELLED. \nThe recent ICE storm caused extensive tree damage to the Park.  The Park also remains without electricity and water. \n\nClean-up and restoration is expected to take until at least March 1st. \nPlease make sure to check back here to see if the March meeting will take place so you don’t make an unnecessary trip over there to find a locked gate. \nWe will attempt to reschedule our speaker for another month. \nField trips will take place as scheduled unless notified by Shelley Smith. \nThank you for your understanding…be well and take good care.

SUMMARY:March 21st - Lytle/Ravenwood Park - Davidson County
DESCRIPTION:Come explore Lytle Park\, one of the newest gems in Nashville’s expanding park system! \nOur fall field trips to this park have consistently drawn great interest\, and this year we’re switching things up with a visit in a different season. March brings a unique blend of lingering winter species and the earliest signs of spring migration. From sparrows and raptors to waterfowl on the ponds\, this under-birded landscape promises exciting discoveries even in the final weeks of winter. \nFor this field trip\, we’ll be guided by Grant Winter\, a local birder who frequents Lytle/Ravenwood Park and knows its habitats well. March 21st offers a wonderful blend of lingering winter species and the first hints of early spring migration. \nWe’ll meet at 7:00 AM at the parking lot and playground at Ravenwood Park in Hermitage (Park Coordinates: 36.190870\, -86.646290). Trails are largely unimproved\, so sturdy footwear is recommended\, and early mornings can be chilly so please dress warmly. \nFor questions\, contact Shelley Smith at wkusmith@gmail.com and include “NTOS Field Trip” in the subject line. \nJoin us as we explore the beauty of Lytle/Ravenwood Park in late winter! \nPlease note: This field trip may be canceled if hazardous weather conditions arise. SUMMARY:April 16th - Monthly meeting - 7 pm followed by a wonderful program...
DESCRIPTION:April 16th – “Forty Favorite Spring Songsters” – \npresented by Richard Connors\n \nRichard will conduct a mini workshop\, with a brief review and quiz to brush up on our Spring migrant and resident songbirds. He will share tips and techniques to better identify and enjoy our local birdsong. With practice\, he says\, you may be less dependent on\, and maybe even outperform\, your Merlin app.\n\n\nRichard Connors is a Nashville photographer\, naturalist and birder. A long-time member of TOS\, Richard has served as NTOS chapter president and as state president. He has used his birding skills developed over the years in scientific projects such as USFWS Breeding Bird Surveys\, Partners in Flight point counts\, Christmas bird counts\, and seasonal surveys. For several years he conducted Beginning Birding and Birding by Ear classes at Warner Parks and at Radnor Lake S.P.  In recent years\, dragonflies and damselflies\, and butterflies have come into focus as favorite subjects. But Spring birds will always be a favorite.

This tract features a mix of open fields\, riparian habitat along the Harpeth River\, and wooded edges making it an excellent spot to look for early spring migrants as well as resident species. The river corridor can be especially productive for swallows\, warblers\, vireos\, and flycatchers\, while the fields may host sparrows and other grassland birds. \nWe’ll begin at 7:00 a.m. and take an approximately 2-mile walk along the gravel and natural-surface pathways. The terrain is relatively flat and open\, offering wide views of the surrounding habitat. \nBring water\, binoculars\, and dress for the weather. We hope you’ll join us for a beautiful spring morning along the Harpeth!
